What is the difference between wetting agents and leveling agents

Wetting agents and leveling agents both exert their effects by reducing the surface tension of the system, so many people feel that they are the same without much difference, and they are also puzzled why they should be distinguished into two different additives. In fact, wetting agents and leveling agents are completely different types of additives.

Firstly, there is a difference in wettability. The ability to reduce surface tension is an indicator for evaluating the wetting ability of wetting agents. The stronger the ability to reduce surface tension, the better the wetting ability, and the stronger the wetting agent's performance. Wetting agents also provide leveling power to the paint film by reducing surface tension, so they also have a certain wetting ability. However, low surface tension can lead to poor leveling. So, there is a significant difference in the wettability between wetting agents and leveling agents.

Secondly, only wettability is not enough. Wetting agents only have the external condition of reducing surface tension, which is not enough to wet substances. They also require their own molecular structure to have good affinity for certain inorganic or organic substances. The leveling agent not only reduces the surface tension of the material to achieve wetting and leveling, but also the high boiling solvent in the leveling agent can extend the opening time of the coating surface, giving the coating a longer leveling time. More importantly, many current leveling agents also have additional properties such as smoothness and scratch resistance, and simply leveling can no longer meet the requirements.

Finally, the performance of the two is completely different. Wetting agents facilitate the dispersion of solid molecules, while leveling agents provide a good leveling effect for coatings, forming a smooth, flat, and uniform coating film. So, the quality of a leveling agent depends on its ability to provide uniform surface tension, and is not directly related to the level of surface tension.
